BEYOND THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM, A FERTILE ECOSYSTEM FOR HEALTHCARE INNOVATION IN FRANCE<\/h3>


From the Institut Pasteur's first discoveries to the Carmat heart, the first self-regulating bioprosthetic artificial heart,\u00a0France is a pioneer in public health<\/strong>\u00a0for over a century and a half.<\/p>

In order to foster innovation in healthcare, i.e. to design tomorrow's medicine while placing the patient at the heart of our actions,\u00a0260 million \u20ac committed over the last ten years<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0340 million in investment released for biotech startups<\/strong>.<\/p>

In today's fast-changing environment, innovation in healthcare must respond to\u00a0three challenges<\/strong>\u00a0primordial :<\/p><\/div><\/div>

  • Promoting\u00a0rapid care<\/strong>\u00a0for citizens ;<\/li>
  • Reorganize and rethink the\u00a0care<\/strong>\u00a0in health ;<\/li>

    The response to these three imperatives is supported by the\u00a0Innovation Sant\u00e9 2030 plan<\/strong>\u00a0and its initiatives to boost France's attractiveness and create productive, long-term collaborations, from fundamental to translational research. In this respect,\u00a07 billion \u20ac will be mobilized as part of this plan to make France the leading European nation in innovative and sovereign healthcare.<\/strong>.<\/p>

    A WIDE RANGE OF SYSTEMS<\/h3>


    A dynamic of innovation driven by a number of regions<\/h4>


    In France, innovation is supported by a variety of innovative structures, each of which helps to\u00a0respond to different territorial contexts and local challenges<\/strong>.<\/p>

    As a result, the healthcare innovation dynamic is driven by a number of regions that account for the vast majority of existing innovation centers. Generally speaking, these innovation centers\u00a0are clustered around major university hospitals and historic industrial basins.<\/strong><\/p>

    Launched in\u00a02005<\/strong>, Competitive clusters are players in the innovation ecosystem, bringing together\u00a0around a given technological and scientific field<\/strong>and\u00a0companies<\/strong>, (from SMEs to large groups) from\u00a0research organizations<\/strong>\u00a0and training<\/strong>, We are committed to a partnership approach designed to generate synergies around innovative joint projects.<\/p>

    These divisions are responsible for\u00a0labelling research projects<\/strong>\u00a0candidates for support from public funding,\u00a0communicate and set up cooperative ventures<\/strong>\u00a0with other clusters and evaluate ongoing research projects.<\/p>

    The State and the regions wish to\u00a0continue to certify and finance these systems<\/strong>\u00a0and have launched a call for projects in 2022 to\u00a0release an annual budget of \u20ac9 million<\/strong>\u00a0from 2023 to 2026.<\/p>

    Historically affiliated with the world of research, specialized in a particular theme and related sub-themes<\/strong>\u00a0(mobility, healthcare, etc.), these structures are\u00a0dedicated to Research and Development of new solutions to meet public policy priorities\u00a0<\/strong>(reducing urban pollution, promoting alternative means of transport, etc.), in partnership with local industries.<\/p>

    Their missions are to\u00a0support open innovation initiatives,<\/strong>\u00a0create synergies between several players<\/strong>\u00a0in the same sector and\u00a0lead an industry community.<\/strong><\/p>

    14 university incubators<\/h4><\/div>

    These business start-up assistance and support structures aim to provide their incubatees with a\u00a0value-added strategic coaching<\/strong>\u00a0financial support, advice, networking, etc. These structures offer\u00a0open spaces and shared offices<\/strong>\u00a0and offer a range of support services\u00a0between 6 and 18 months.<\/strong><\/p>

    13 project gas pedals<\/h4><\/div>

    Gas pedals are structures offering a range of high value-added services to young companies undergoing organic growth. There are 13 of them in France, and their mission is to\u2019support companies at a more advanced stage than in an incubator<\/strong>, by putting them in touch with business angels and investors, while developing innovative, structured projects.<\/p>

    These structures are\u00a0mostly private<\/strong>\u00a0and profit-making<\/strong>\u00a0and offer support for varying lengths of time\u00a0between less than six months and more than a year.<\/strong><\/p>

    5 health innovation hubs<\/h4><\/div>

    Innovation hubs are platforms open to all innovation players, offering a wide range of products and services.\u00a0a multitude of programs, residencies and events<\/strong>. More often than not, they are embodied in a dedicated physical location. These structures can be\u00a0public, private or mixed<\/strong>\u00a0and propose\u00a0support from 3 months to 3 years<\/strong>, with regard to the support program.<\/p>

    17 initiatives to promote local innovation in healthcare<\/h4><\/div>

    French Tech initiatives, which promote the local innovation ecosystem in a given region, bring together communities with a high density of mature, hyper-growth start-ups. They facilitate innovation\u00a0within industries and network start-ups and large companies.<\/strong><\/p>

    7 campuses of excellence<\/h4><\/div>

    Created in 2009,\u00a0University Hospital Institutes (IHU)<\/strong>\u00a0were based on a model combining care and research, with relative autonomy from University Hospitals (CHU) and public bodies. These are French centers of excellence with an international vocation in research, care and training,\u00a0boost France's long-term competitiveness<\/strong>\u00a0by promoting the development of the biomedical industry.<\/p>

    The IHU's mission is to\u00a0promote the development of translational research that directly benefits patients<\/strong>, The new IHU will bring together all the strengths around a single theme on a single site.     Beyond these mixed (public-private) systems,\u00a0the players in the care sector are now equipped to support these national ambitions.<\/strong>\u00a0Private and public healthcare establishments are revitalizing their innovation policies and positioning themselves more on the cutting edge of innovation.\u00a0translational research.<\/strong><\/p>

      OUR PARTICIPATION IN THE HACKING HEALTH CAMP<\/strong><\/p>


      A unifying event for innovation in healthcare<\/h4>

      The world's biggest healthcare hackathon takes place every year in Strasbourg: Hacking Health Camp.<\/p>

      On the occasion of the\u00a010\u00e8me<\/sup>\u00a0edition<\/strong>\u00a0This year, players in the digital and healthcare sectors will be challenging themselves to solve problems in 50 hours. The promise: to turn an idea into a working prototype in 50 hours, which could then lead to the creation of a start-up or a long-term solution.<\/p>

      In 9 years, this large-scale event has enabled the development of nearly\u00a0200 prototypes<\/strong>\u00a0and drive the creation of\u00a025 startups<\/strong>, thanks to the participation of over\u00a04,000 health innovators<\/strong>.<\/p>
